The SF6-ban is approaching – KL Industri is ready to guide customers through the transition

From January 2026, it will no longer be permitted to commission medium-voltage switchgear that contains SF6-gas. This new regulation, part of the EU’s revised F-gas Regulation, represents one of the most significant technical transitions in the power distribution industry in recent years. At KL Industri, we have closely followed this development – and have been preparing for a long time.

A transition that demands foresight

The SF6-ban is more than a regulatory change – it is a shift that requires technical adaptation, updated procedures, and long-term thinking. At the ELFACK trade fair in Gothenburg, it was clear that this issue is high on the industry agenda. Many of the conversations we had revolved around SF6 and how the new regulation will impact planning, procurement, and operations.

“We saw a great need to discuss what the ban actually means in practice,” says Roger Andersson, Head of Sales and Marketing at KL Industri. “Many wanted to understand what solutions are available, what to consider for upcoming projects, and what the current supply situation looks like.”

A proven path away from SF6

At KL Industri, we have long been actively developing SF6-free solutions that meet high technical standards and fulfill industry requirements. As a result, we now offer a product portfolio that is already well established – both in our own production and in customer installations.

“We have been developing and manufacturing SF6-free switchgear for over ten years. This means we now have a stable product range and a production chain tailored to the new conditions,” says Roger Andersson.

Our solution, unerRING, is a prime example of a product that combines operational reliability, sustainability, and flexibility. Thanks to its modular design, it can easily be adapted to various grid configurations and installation environments – whether for new builds or retrofit projects. With unerRING, our customers get a solution that is ready for both today and tomorrow.

Delivery capability and a holistic offering

KL Industri has for several years worked strategically to ensure high delivery reliability – even during times of material shortages and increased demand. Through strong, long-term partnerships with our suppliers, we are able to offer short lead times – something that will be critical as the demand for SF6-free solutions increases across Europe.

“We know the transition will put pressure on the entire industry. That’s why we urge our customers to contact us well in advance. Being one step ahead is crucial to avoid project delays,” says Roger Andersson.

Another key strength lies in our end-to-end capabilities. We supply everything from standalone switchgear and transformers to complete substations – allowing us to take full responsibility for the entire chain.

This creates clarity, efficiency, and reliability for our customers.

Transitioning – Together with our customers

To fully focus on future-proof technology, KL Industri will end the possibility to order SF6-based medium-voltage switchgear at the end of May. Production will thereafter be fully converted to our SF6-free alternatives.

This is a clear statement – but also a natural continuation of the path we have already taken.

“We see this as an opportunity to drive the industry in the right direction. We have the technology, we have the experience, and we have the capacity to meet our customers’ needs,” says Roger Andersson.

The transition away from SF6 is complex but necessary. With the right planning and the right partner, it can be managed both safely and efficiently.
