Our power grid substations connect to large power plants, allowing the generated electricity to be transformed and safely used. This means you can, for example, turn on lights, charge batteries, and heat your home. Substations are therefore an invisible but incredibly important part of our everyday lives.

In Sweden, there are currently around 190,000 power grid substations that transform and distribute electricity to households, shopping centers, industries, and more.
Each year, the industry installs approximately 7,500 new substations.
KL Industri in Finspång manufactures about 40% of the substations ordered annually for new establishments or replacements in Sweden.
About the power grid substation
A power grid substation transforms medium voltage, typically 12,000 or 24,000 volts, into low voltage (400/230 volts) and is a crucial part of power distribution, making electricity safe and usable for households and industries. It plays a central role in infrastructure by enabling stable and secure power supply for daily needs – from operating lighting and heating to powering electronics and machinery – and contributes to the integration of renewable energy.
Today, substations are required to handle the increased integration of renewable energy, such as solar panels.
They must be capable of measuring and managing both electricity production and consumption in real time, which requires advanced metering equipment and automated systems to balance the power grid.
Substations also need to be more digitalized and connected to effectively integrate smart grid solutions and energy storage systems.
